Please enjoy images from our weekend in Venice. The allure of Venice exists largely due to its context as a port city. In its architecture, streets and its paintings cultures mingle to create an identity that is unique to the Venetian lagoon. The juxtaposition to Florence’s culture is stunning (Florence being inland and looking largely to Rome for its inspiration). The influence of far-off lands including Constantinople and the Netherlands are evident, particularly in St. Mark’s Basilica and its mosaics, as well as the use of oil paint by artists such as Bellini and Titian. Tomorrow we take the train to Pisa! Sadly, we only have one week left.
