Our Presentation by Dr. Bruce Johnson Posted on January 7th, 2015 by

IMG_1951This morning Dr. Bruce Johnson came in and talked about Winston Churchill, the Blitz, and post-WWII London.  He started by talking about the many biographies that have been written on Winston Churchill.  The biographies are numerous and about 100 new books come out about him each year.  Churchill was the Prime Minister of Great Britain during WWII, but during 1945 the people no longer needed a war leader and he lost his premiership.  Some of the fun things Churchill is known for is never speaking without notes, never riding a bus, the invention of the tank, and his famous speech with the statement of “blood, toil, tears, and sweat.” One of the fun stories we were told about him was that the following picture was taken right after the photographer took a cigar away from him without his permission.  churchill

Dr. Johnson ended his presentation advising us on how not to get pick pocketed in Europe.  His tips included:  using a money belt, not taking the first train car, staying away from the door on the train, having a second person with you at the ATM, and being aware of distractions made to avert your attention away from your money and valuables.  He highly recommended visiting the shopping centers Fortum and Masons in London, theaters, the War Rooms, and St. Paul’s Cathedral.  He also recommends visiting grocery stores everywhere we go because you can learn a lot about people and how they make their purchases.  We really appreciated his expertise and advice as we draw closer to our departure!
