Our First Full Day in Grossefehn Posted on January 12th, 2015 by

Today, January 12th, we got a chance to experience Grossefehn, and Northern Germany. As a group we were able to tour a German dairy farm which was very interesting because while some of us are from rural areas, many of us are not. We then went to a local museum and learned about how people lived in this area centuries ago. There was a lack of trees in the area, so for that reason, the people were forced to dig pete moss out of the group to fuel their fires, and also forced to build their houses out of brick, using clay found beneath the pete. In Northern Germany, Ostfreisland as they call it, you learn quickly that the people drink a lot of tea. Personally, I think I have had seven or eight cups of tea today. As the day went on we got a chance to visit a couple churches in the area which were very interesting. One of the churches in particular, was constructed in the 1700’s, which is very different from American history, seeing as how our history only goes back a couple hundred years. We were able to stop at a small shopping mall to grab some lunch on our way to meet the mayor of Grossefehn for a small reception. Mayor Olaf was very happy to meet with us and talk about differences and similarities between our two countries. Once again, we had tea during our time with him and it was interesting to here some of the cliches that Germans have about Americans. Over all, this was a very full day, we certainly got a healthy dose of German culture today.
